The NorD system – transformable port and bridge solutions on a fast schedule
NorD is an innovative, modular concrete pontoon system that enables ports or bridges to be designed like interconnecting building blocks. The NorD system allows for versatile and sustainable solutions – a port or bridge can be designed and implemented on a very short schedule, even in a few weeks. This opens new opportunities in rapidly changing or unexpected situations.
Dual-use flexibility for changing needs
The NorD system is designed for dual use.
In normal conditions, the system enables:
- significant cost savings in construction compared to fixed structures
- easy customization, mobility, and expandability due to its modular design
- a short design process, as the performance of the pre-engineered and factory-built product is already known
- rapid deployment directly from stock.
In disordered situations or disrupted conditions, the system enables
- very fast response – in many cases within just a few days
- easy and quick disassembly and relocation of the port, or part of it to a new location.
Dual-use capability makes it possible to prepare for changing situations or unforeseen events while the structure remains in active civilian use. In a critical situation, a NorD bridge can be relocated and transformed into a port – or vice versa.
Designed in collaboration with authorities and experts
The development of NorD began in the late 2010s. The system is designed in close collaboration with authorities, such as ELY Centre, Finnish Defence Forces, port operators and National Emergency Supply Agency.
The NorD system has undergone an extensive program of research, development and testing. Every detail has been carefully considered and engineered. The system has been calculated, modelled and simulated by four reputable engineering firms. In 2021 the NorD system received an official operating permit from the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.
Dozens of successful NorD installations have been executed, including for:
- Finnish Navy
- Commercial port operators
- Commuter ferry companies
- Centre for Economic Development and the Environment
The collaboration has been ongoing for a long time in various Nordic countries – and is now expanding globally.
